D'Lopez Cigars

It took some 400 years for Martin Lopez to create some of the most exquisite tobacco products available on the market today. In the first 25 years of the 1900′s, D’Lopez had been founded and in business thanks to a dedicated and passionate family. But how did it all come about, and who is D’Lopez?

According to the researchers the first plantations of tobacco were established in Cuba during the beginning of 17th century (1610).  The Almendares River in Havana and the Arimnao River in the central part of the province of Las Villas played an intricate part of tobacco production in those days. And those are the roots of D’Lopez Cigars.

The widespread production of tobacco came to other important cities like Trinidad and Pinar del Rio, and eventually it’s appeal  reached smokers in America.  However, what we know today as a “cigar” was first produced in Spain around 1710 using Cuban tobacco.

The demand for cigars grew to global scales and popularity for the rolled tobacco expanded into Europe. The quality of Cuban cigars, and D’ Lopez, lead to the eventual replacement of Spanish cigars. It was not until 1750 when cigar production reached a significant level in Cuba, and soon became, along with the Sugar Cane Industry, the main source of employment for Cuban families.

By 1925, Martín Lopez a descendant of the Spanish, fathered 12 kids, and moved to La Moza, a village close to the Arimao River’s Riviera and started working the tobacco fields. Later, they moved to Mataguà, where just aboout every member of the Lopez family, including his wife Clara Moreno, worked in a tobacco selection center.  Martin Lopez’s daughter Rafaela owned RHB La Flor de Manicaragua, a prominent cigar factory.

The Lopez cigar tradition was born and continues today to contribute a large portion of Cuba’s  tobacco exports. Members of the Lopez family are still employed in the tobacco selection center to this, producing some of the greatest selection of cigars on the planet – D’Lopez Cigars.
